Course description
On this practical and engaging eight-week course, led by acclaimed author Chris Bridges and suitable for both beginning and more experienced writers, you will explore the craft and secrets of writing crime fiction, psychological thrillers and suspense. Through lively, in-depth discussion and the close reading of example texts you’ll dive deep into the essential elements of the form, including opening lines, character, perspective, setting, plot and narrative twists, and endings. Creative writing exercises will provide inspiration and ideas, while constructive, supportive feedback from your fellow group members and the course tutor will help you develop your own crime fiction work in progress.
About the tutor
Chris Bridges is the author of Sick To Death, chosen as an The Observer thriller of the month and shortlisted for the 2025 McDermid Debut Award, and The Death Bed. He is an alumnus of the 2022 London Writers Awards, and his third novel, Two Truths And A Lie (Wildfire) is forthcoming in 2027. He is a frequent speaker at crime writing panels, including at this year’s prestigious Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival in Harrogate.
