Course description
In this in-depth, immersive three-hour workshop, led by acclaimed playwright April De Angelis and suitable for both beginning and more experienced writers, we will explore the essential building blocks for writing for the stage. Taking as our starting point the close examination of scene structure, we will journey through ways of writing character, dialogue, action, setting and storytelling, unlocking our imaginations and creating the foundations to begin, or progress, the process of writing and structuring a play.
About the tutor
April De Angelis is an acclaimed British playwright known for her powerful exploration of feminist themes and women's lives. Her work spans theatre, radio, and television, and her plays have been produced by the Royal Court, National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company, Hampstead Theatre, and the West End. Notable works include Playhouse Creatures, A Laughing Matter and My Brilliant Friend, and her acclaimed adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan novels for the stage. Her play Jumpy was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award in 2012 for Best New Play. She has also written for radio, with work broadcast by the BBC, and has contributed to opera, writing libretti for Flight (Glyndebourne) and The Silent Twins (Almeida).
