Course description
On this six-week course we’ll explore the crucial elements of the novel, working on story and plot, narrative structure and point of view. We’ll look at ways of creating convincing characters, how to integrate dialogue, action and reflection to build compelling scenes, and examine approaches to rewriting and editing. Practical exercises, the study of examples from fiction, and discussion of your work in progress will give you the tools, resources and focus you need for writing your novel, whatever stage it’s at.
About the tutor
Jake Arnott is the author of nine highly acclaimed novels, and his bestselling debut The Long Firm was adapted as a BAFTA award-winning BBC TV series. He has taught and mentored in creative writing for over 25 years. His latest novel Netherwood will be published in August 2026.
