Course Description

On this eight-week playwrighting course, led by a multi-award-winning industry professional, participants will gain insight into and explore the fundamental elements of writing for the stage. Suitable for writers of all levels of experience, from those who have never written a play before to more seasoned writers seeking to develop a work in progress, participants will learn to mine their imaginations for ideas while developing their playwriting skills and knowledge through a range of workshop exercises, the reading and study of script extracts, and by receiving feedback on their writing from their fellow group members and the course tutor.  Each weekly session will explore different aspects of playwriting craft and technique, from honing a voice to thinking theatrically through metaphor and imagery; building world, developing character and dialogue, and experimenting with structure and form. The course will also provide participants with advice on re-drafting a work in progress and potential first steps in the industry, and will culminate in an additional ‘read through’ evening at the end of term, at which they will read from each other’s work to gain a sense of how their writing sounds in performance.
